RLSS UK NATIONAL POOL LIFEGUARD COURSE (NPLQ) 10TH EDITION
Pre Requisites Every candidate, prior to commencement of training for the NPLQ must:
Be 16 years of age at the time of taking the NPLQ assessment;
Be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:-
Jump / dive into deep water
Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water.
Tread water for 30 seconds
Surface dive to the floor of the pool
Climb out unaided without ladder / steps and where the pool design permits
Course Content Training and assessment for the NPLQ is in three sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the NPLQ.
Section 1 - The Lifeguard and the Law, Swimming Pool Supervision
Element 1 – The Lifeguard and the Law
Element 2 – Swimming Pool, Hazards and Control Measures
Element 3 – Swimming Pool Supervision
Section 2 - Intervention and Rescue and Emergency Action Plans
Element 1 – Intervention and Rescue
Element 2 – Rescue of a Casualty with a Suspected Spinal Injury
Element 3 – Emergency Action Plan
Section 3 - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, AED, and First Aid
Element 1 – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Element 2 – Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
Element 3 – First Aid
Element 2 of Section 3 can include an optional bolt of AED on to the qualification. Course Assessment Assessment for the NPLQ takes place at the conclusion of a training course for a minimum of 36 hours over 5 days or a number of weeks. The validity period of the award is 2 years from the date of assessment.
Parking
Limited parking is available beneath the Cripps Centre accessed from the Bedford Road. This car park is operated by Parking Eye, you will need to input their vehicle registration details into a keypad in the central hub each time they visit the centre to avoid a £100 parking charge. Please follow the signs to access the centre from this car park whilst the normal route is unavailable.
The nearest public payable carparks are Midsummer Meadows, St Johns and St Michael's Multi Story carparks.
Refreshments
There are vending machines within the centre. There is a M&S food hall, Costa and Subway within the hospital. However, it is advised you bring your own food / drinks for each day.

Principles of Fitness Training
Develop your understanding of how to plan effective warm ups, cool downs as well as learn how to construct an exercise session using resistance, cardiovascular and body weight exercise.

Finally you will build upon your principles knowledge and learn to construct specific exercise programmes for a range of goals and outcomes. Some experience of water-based exercise is useful.
The course requires physical exertion, and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at Level 1.
Learners aged 16+.
Qualified fitness instructors wishing to widen their skills to offer water-based exercise sessions.
